On the 15th-16th, YU General Club Association held “Central Club Fair.” Street recruit of members started with advertisement of clubs to freshmen. More than 4,000 members from more than 70 groups are working in eight divisions including academy, service, sports, art, etc. [March 16, 2023] “Freshmen of Class 23! Let’s join a club and make pleasant campus memories!” The university campus in spring vibes was full of energy. Recruit of group members is active for the freshmen with the start of the 2023 new semester. The 36th General Club Association (Chairman KWON Hyeok-jun) of YU held “2023 Group Fair” on Cheonma Way of the campus for two days from 15th to 16th. Central Group Fair is an event to be held in March every year and senior members of groups recruit members on the street by explaining properties of groups and situations of activities to freshmen. More than 70 groups in eight divisions consisting of liberal arts, sports, service, academy, language, applied studies, arts, and religion of YU Central Group Association participated in the fair and made club member recruit activities for freshmen and existing students. Chairman KWON Hyeok-jun (4th grade of Faculty of Chemical Engineering) of YU Central Group Association said, “More than 4,000 students joined and make activities in the groups of each division now. Memories on the campus may be enriched through club activities. Through this fair, students will have the opportunities to get more understanding of interested groups. The doors of clubs are open always as well as the period of the fair.” I hope many freshmen of Class 23 to actively participate in group activities.” Meanwhile, during the period of the group fair, main agencies and groups of the university, such as student support teams, Student Public Relations Ambassador “Youngdae Sarang,” International Public Relations Ambassador, YU Broadcasting Station UBS, and Gender Equality Center, frequently used by students operated PR booths and introduced agencies and programs, etc.

Won successive awards in major-related competitions held last year, such as “University Student App Development Challenge K-Hackathon” [March 08, 2023] <Students of YU Department of Computer Science won the Excellence Award at the 10th National Student App Development Challenge K-Hackathon> Students of YU Department of Computer Science swept major competitions and contests held last year and showed their excellent major-capability. Team “Bom Bom” consisting of PARK Ji-yeon, OH Eun-ah, and LEE Gyeong-ju from YU Department of Computer Science and KIM Yun-ju from YU Department of Visual Design won the Korea Contents Association President’s Award (Excellence Award) at the 10th National Student App Development Challenge K-Hackathon held from June to November last year. Their award work is “Working Parents: A life made by working couples together.” It is a comprehensive childcare platform that integrates neighborhood, kindergarten, and home based on app sharing between husband and wife. It was evaluated that it would be helpful in resolving the difficulties faced by working couples and in alleviating the low birth rate problem. They formed another team with NA Yoo-gyeong and JEON In-seo (both, 4th grade) and developed “Metablock.”, a metaverse immersive education platform using Haptic (a technology that allows you to feel tactile sensation, power, and sense of movement among computer functions). Their major-capability and creativity for ideas were recognized by winning IT Female Entrepreneurs Association President Award (Bronze Prize) at the Eve and ICT Mentoring Contest in 2022, as well as the Local Excellence in Science and Engineering Talent Award at the 14th WIT Leader Conference and Ceremony. The students of YU Department of Computer Science also stood out in the competition they participated in as a joint team with the students of other majors. Team “Young Guys” consisting of CHO Chang-heon (Department of Computer Engineering), KIM Hong-tae (Department of Economics and Finance/Double Major in Computer Science), SEO Seong-won (Department of Business Administration/Double Major in Computer Science), and JEONG Ho-chan (Department of Communication and Communication) won the grand prize at the “2022 Northeast Public Data Utilization Challenge Hackathon” hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency. 'DAON' is a service that analyzes general conversations like actual conversations with humans through natural language processing and recommends the most suitable policy for the user. Unlike other services that require the use of accurate terms to search for welfare policies, DAON attracted the attention of the contest participants. Also, the capability of the students of YU Department of Computer Science was externally recognized through Grand Prize (KIM Chae-il, LEE Tae-hoon, CHOI Eun-seon) at “2022 Korea Information Processing Society ICT Mentoring Conference,” “2022 Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service President's Award (CHO Chang-heon) at “Big Leader AI Academy Project,” and “2021 Korea Tourism Organization President's Award” (HONG Young-min).

Capabilities of both organizations will gather for joint researches on local educational issues, etc. [March 10, 2023] YU Department of Education (BK21 Pro Bono Regional Education Innovation Talent Fostering Team) concluded a business agreement on “development of local future education “ with Suseong-gu Lifelong Learning Center of Suseong Future Education Foundation on February 23rd. Ten persons from both organizations including Professor HEO Jun in charge of the leader of BK21 Pro Bono Regional Education Innovation Talent Fostering Team and Secretary General KIM So-yeong of Suseong Future Education Foundation participated in the agreement ceremony. “Pro Bono” type talents means the persons who donate their professional knowledge, technology, and experiences, etc. for public benefits. Alma Master Visit Event in February … 1st Class alumnus lawyers gathered together for the sake of their alma mater and juniors In 2021, too, 39 alumnus lawyers donated KRW 110 million as development fund Yearly graduated alumni’s alma master visit event is planned. [March 14, 2023] The lawyers of YU Law School (hereinafter referred to as Law School) donated development fund for development of YU, their alma master. More than 20 alumnus lawyers, 1st class graduates from YU Law School, visited YU in February. The 1st class graduates gathered together to help development of their ma master and had the 1st alma master visit event. They met President CHOI Oe-chool and expressed their will to donate KRW 30 million to help development of the university. Lawyer MOON Kang-seok participated in the alma master visit event and said, “After graduating from Law School, I acted as a lawyer in society and, whenever I met my classmates, I exchanged many opinions about the will to contribute in development of my alma mater. I hope that my alma mater develops and my juniors are supported for their studies. I will continue to support my alma mater and my juniors as soon as I get a chance. I hope continuation to a good tradition.” President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “Legal professionals from YU ranging from YU School of Law to current Law School are active in all areas and levels and maintain the status as a cradle for training legal professionals. Last year in 2021, 39 alumni donated a total of 110 million won, and the first alumni also donated 10 million won in addition to the 30 million won donated for this event. Held admission ceremony and various welcome events for 5,000 YU freshmen in Gyeongsan Gymnasium on the 28th Congratulatory video messages by Assembly Member JU Ho-young and national soccer player SON Jun-ho, etc. Enhancement of expectations for campus life and inspiration of new students to feel the sense of belonging to and love of their school [February 28, 2023] <YU’s 2023 admission ceremony (Gyeongsan Gymnasium)> At 2:00 pm on February 28th, about 5,000 Class 2023 freshmen gathered at the campus of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool). YU held admission ceremony and congratulatory events for 2023 freshmen. The YU freshmen gathered in groups, took buses prepared by the university, and moved to the Gyeongsan Gymnasium where the admission ceremony was held. The off-line entrance ceremony was held after a long time and the Gyeongsan Gymnasium was fulfilled with the heat of a festival. In the pre-ceremony events started at 2:30 pm before the official admission ceremony, YU freshmen opened the gate of the admission ceremony with vocal music and by learning school song with seniors. Before starting the admission ceremony, Senior Vice Chairman KIM Gwan-yong of the Advisory Council for Democratic and Peaceful Unification, Assembly Member JU Ho-young, Governor LEE Cheol-woo of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Mayor JO Hyeon-il of Gyeongsan-si, and national soccer player SON Jun-ho, etc. from all walks of life in Korea sent congratulatory videos and telegrams and received ovations. <Freshmen are learning school song in YU’s 2023 Freshman Admission Ceremony> In the admission ceremony, Chairman HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, President CHOI Oe-chool of YU, and major staff of the university participated with more than 5,000 YU freshmen and congratulated them. At 3:00 pm, about 5,000 YU freshmen started their first official event with declaration of admission permission by President CHOI Oe-chool of YU and oath of admission by the representatives of freshmen. <Representatives of freshmen swear an oath of admission in front of President CHOI Oe-chool (Left)> Chairman HAN Jae-sook said in her encouragement words, “I welcome the freshmen along with all the Cheonma Family Members of Yeongnam School Corporation. The endeavors for creativity, ethics, critical thinking, sharing, and service will become your competitiveness. Only prepared young people will have future opportunities. You freshmen at this place today will become the protagonists.” YU held a welcome party for the freshmen as the second part of the event. Starting with the relay congratulatory videos of students and staff produced by the students of UBS, YU education broadcasting, various events including vision performances containing the developmental direction and educational philosophy of YU and congratulatory performances prepared by college students welcomed the freshmen. Hip-hop singers Youngji and HAN Yohan stepped up to the final stage of welcome party and received a great response from the freshmen. KIM Seo-yeon (1st Grade of Department of Computer Engineering) swore the admission oath and said, “It’s very meaningful for me to swear the admission oath as the representative of the freshmen in the admission ceremony of the university. I expect the campus life as such many seniors and professors prepared diverse events and welcome us. I’d like to enjoy my campus life with the sense of belonging to and love of the school as a student of YU.”

8,934 books of Professor Yoshida Yutaka, a Japanese eminent historian Documents on modern and contemporary political history and military relations in Japan … High value of research materials on modern history of Korea and East Asia Acquisition by Seokoh Cultural Foundation and donation to YU Library for historical development between Korea and Japan [February 17, 2023] <Catalog of “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” of YU Library> Central Library of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) published the catalog of “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” possessed by Honorary Professor Yoshida Yutaka (Hitotsubashi University), a famous Japanese historian. “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” consists of the documents on modern and contemporary political history and military relations in Japan collected by Professor Yoshida for more than 40 years and is evaluated as valuable data for the research and development of modern history in Korea and East Asia. Especially, it contains many materials with high historical value, such as diaries and experiences of former Japanese soldiers, and photographic materials. Seokoh Cultural Foundation (Chairman YOON Dong-han) acquired the books of Professor Yoshida and donated them to YU Library in 2020 to support relational and historical development between Korea and Japan. YU Central Library named them “Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library” in honor of the will of Professor Yoshida and Seokoh Cultural Foundation and designated as a library in a separate space in the library. <Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library> YU Central Library published a catalog of 8,934 books through preparations for three years for good utilization of historically highly valuable books. The catalog states bibliographic items of the books in full in the order of signatures and indexes of authors are attached for easy searching by researchers. Also, the books may be searched and the list may be found online through the cyber donation book DB of the library’s website. Seokoh Cultural Foundation expressed its expectation that the catalog becomes the motive to inform modern and contemporary Japanese history and military history, to set history right, and to encourage many studies. YU Central Library intends to distribute Yoshida Yutaka/Seokoh Library free of charge to domestic-related agencies and to hold a special lecture on historical studies on Korea-Japan relations with an invitation of Professor Yoshida in around May 2023.

YU concluded an agreement on exchange of students and professors with University of Copenhagen on February 6th.University of Copenhagen is a public university in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, and is a world-level leading university that ranked 79th in 2022 university evaluation by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) of GB that is a world-level university evaluation agency. The university was founded in 1479 by a papal edict and is the second-oldest university next to Uppsala University (1477) in Sweden in the North European area. <Scene of University of Copenhagen, Denmark> According to the concluded agreement, each of the two universities will select and dispatch three exchange students every year.Dispatched students are exempted from payment of tuition in the university they are dispatched to if they pay tuition to the original university. YU decided to subsidize the tuition fees of Korean Language Education Center for the students of University of Copenhagen coming to YU. YU’s student exchange program is an overseas dispatch program for students to complete regular classes after being dispatched to foreign sister universities for one semester or one year and is highly appreciated by students. Students may have the opportunities to enhance their language and global capability by studying at foreign leading universities. YU intends to expand exchange with European leading universities with conclusion of an agreement with University of Copenhagen.YU intends to conclude a student exchange agreement with Ca'Foscari University of Venice, a public university in Venice, Italy, in the first half and has a discussion on an exchange agreement with University of Naples L'Orientale, Naples, Italy. Director YOE Taek-dong of YU Internal Bureau said, “YU is now expanding global education & research network with exchange agreements with 500 universities and organizations in 59 countries. YU is a real global campus where foreigner students from the whole world study. I hope YU students to enhance their capability through various exchange activities with foreign students studying at YU as well as the overseas dispatch program.”

Students of Department of Sociology deduced regional vitalization plans through field-focused classes. Sharing teaching methods and outcomes with professors and students of Ho Chi Minh University of Economics, Vietnam [February 16, 2023] <Students of Department of Sociology visited Ho Chi Minh University of Economics, Vietnam and shared outcomes of Global Capstone Design class> “Global Capstone Design” launched by YU Department of Sociology is attracting attention as a college innovation class. Global Capstone Design is a class for colleges to strengthen Industry-academy-research cooperation in order to generate corporate value, support employment & startup, and construct sharing/cooperation systems and is implemented as “3rd Leaders in Industry-university Cooperation (LINC 3.0).” of the Ministry of Education. The subject of Global Capstone Design class of YU Department of Sociology was “Seeking for a vitalization plan for Cheongdo and Gunwi in crisis of local extinction.”The students of the class were divided into four teams for Cheongdo and four teams for Gunwi and sought for problems through field survey and suggested a local vitalization plan in consideration of probability and effect of the achievement. The students suggested various ideas such as production of characters and goods using local specialties including Cheongdo persimmon, etc., PR plans for local tour of Cheongdo Eupseong and Gunwi Volcano Village, etc., production of PR videos with foreigner students, etc. Professor JEONG Yong-gyo of Department of Sociology planned Global Capstone Design class and said, “The university should provide field classes escaping from classrooms. Especially, the students majoring in sociology should grow various views to look at social phenomena. Recently, central government and local governments establish various policies and input fund in order to prevent local extinction. However, if the youth has no interest, they are merely sand castles. The students found attractive matters of Korean agricultural villages and suggested local vitalization plans by identifying problems in agricultural areas and seeking for various solutions through the Global Capstone Design class.” During this winter vacation, the students of YU Department of Sociology visited Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics, Vietnam to share outcomes of Global Capstone Design class with foreign universities. Their purpose was to share the outcomes of Global Capstone Design class and to continue exchange between the two. YU students had the time to present outcomes of last semester’s duties and to make Q&A for the students and professors of Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics. Vice President Vo Thi Khanh Van of Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics watched the students’ presentations and said, “I think that Global Capstone Design class provided by YU Department of Sociology is an advanced class to prepare the future. I thank for sharing the excellent course and outcomes of the class.
